What do squirrels like to eat the most?
Have you ever wanted to keep a squirrel as a pet or ever tried to imagine how long these little yard invaders live, well a little more info on them will come in handy!
There different species of squirrels and they all possess different lifespans. Most squirrels in captivity as believed to live longer than the squirrels outside as in the wild ones.
As a matter of fact, many squirrels do not live past 5 years of age.
A squirrel can be defined as both a mammal and a rodent. They are referred to as mammals since their bodies are covered in hair and they also have mammary glands that produce milk to feed their children.
Their powerful gnawing characteristics and oversized incisors make them count as rodents.
Squirrels are found universally and are more concentrated in areas like Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.
Currently, there are more than 200 different species on earth, whereas each species has its own diet and different habitat.
There are three different classes of squirrels; the tree, ground, and flying.
Ground squirrels live naturally on the ground, and they mostly dig out burrows for themselves. Tree squirrels live in burrows within the forest and trees and they build nests in between crooks of branches.
Flying squirrels are a special case, some make their homes in tree holes, and others live in built nests, whereas others as “nomads”, never settle in one place for long since they are afraid of predators.
The most distinct feature of the flying squirrels is the fact that they can move from tree to tree using their “wings” which in turn serves as an excellent survival mechanism.
At the same time, squirrels are omnivores meaning they eat meat, green vegetables, and typically anything they get their paws on. Their favorite food includes seeds, nuts, fruits, and fungi. But they also eat insects, small snakes, and eggs.
What do squirrels eat in the winter?
Squirrels are very good gathers in so that they gather and bury food as they prepare for winter, it’s also rare to find squirrels stealing from the storage space of other squirrels.
This also makes it difficult for them to find food during spring since the food that they had buried has sprouted and started to grow. In winter, they always have plenty of food.
But having said that, generally most squirrels like to eat fruits and vegetables. So they are generally vegetarians. And like most animals of wild like rodents, they will just mot likely eat anything that is readily available at their disposal.
Nuts are also a major part of a squirrel’s diet. So, all nuts from walnuts, groundnuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia, hickory, pecans, almonds, chestnuts, pine nuts, acorns, and peanuts form part of their delicacies.
Young squirrels feed on their mothers’ milk since they are mammals and continue to breastfeed until after 70 days when they now start to feed on nuts and other available food.
A squirrel with a more diverse diet is likely to live, but since these animals tend to only eat healthy foods, they don’t suffer the same problems that humans do.
If you ever plan to keep a squirrel as a pet, then it’s important to note that they dislike the following foods. Dairy, chips, chocolate, candy, soda, bread, raw garlic, raw onion, sugars, and any type of peppers.
They should also be fed mostly during the day. Another thing is not to overfeed them and give them plenty of water.
A squirrel does not die like most wild animals save for the case where it gets hit by a car then die of heart disease!
